Analysis
The Majority of the world’s t-shirts are made with cotton, so a lot of cotton needs to be grown. It is in the growing process in which cotton does a lot of its damage through the use of chemicals that are used to stimulate and fasten growth. Specifically fertilizers, insecticide and pesticides all which affect not only the well being of the farmers that work there but also ravage nearby ecosystems through runoff (Wallander 2012). An alternative for farmers is to grow only organic cotton through natural methods such as strip cutting, beneficial insect releases or weeding machinery without using toxic chemicals (Baldwin 2008). Organic farming of cotton has several benefits including, protecting and sustaining the health of the workers by not exposing them to harmful chemicals. Also it prevents the contamination of surface and ground water which will stop any runoff from having a negative effect on nearby ecosystems. Similarly by using organic and non chemical dyes for the production of t shirts will cause less of an impact to the environment when the remaining dye must be dumped.
T-shirts when thrown away often make their way through an incinerator which causes more pollution by releasing carbon emissions into the air and then go straight in to a land fill. Taking up space and resources, but there are several organizations that offer alternatives like textile recycling, a method in which used or old textiles are reprocessed into to new types of different fabrics. Also organizations offer donation boxes where old clothes that you no longer want can go to someone else who may need it. As well as just wearing your t-shirts to their full potential, majority of clothing that ends up in landfills is still perfectly wearable and could have continued service to the user.
Alternatives to normal t-shirts is to buy organic t-shirts, these are made of cotton grown without harmful pesticides and insecticides which help promote organic farming which will in turn cause less of an impact to our environment. Purchasing used clothing from thrift stores will stop unnecessary waste and prolong the life of the clothing. Businesses see the demand for environment friendly clothing and now offer several different t-shirts which are made out of more eco-friendly materials such as bamboo(natural, renewable and absorbs greenhouse gases). Also just by purchasing durable clothing and using it to its maximum potential ensuring that it will last a long time before it needs to be replaced. As well as t-shirts that can be washed with cold water and hang dried instead of the use of warm water and a drier both using excessive amounts of energy.
